The Diamond Bar girls’ and boys’ soccer teams entered the week on track to win Sierra League championships.
The girls’ team, under Coach John Hall, went into Wednesday’s match against Nogales with a 15-2-2 record and was 10-0-1 in league play. The Brahmas are led by returning All-Southern Section player Brenna Cox.
The boys team, under Coach Don Garrett, began the week 14-2-3 and 9-1-1. Goaltender Rick Cardoza has been a key player for the Brahmas.

Several San Gabriel Valley basketball teams entered the week ranked among the top teams in the state in their divisions.
In boys’ basketball, Glendora was ranked ninth in Division II.
La Canada was second behind Foothill of Sacramento in Division III. St. Francis was fifth and San Dimas was ninth.
Pasadena Poly was sixth in Division V.
In girls’ basketball, Bishop Amat was ranked ninth in Division II.
COMMUNITY COLLEGES
Citrus, Mt. San Antonio College and Pasadena City College are preparing to open their baseball seasons.
Citrus, under Coach Skip Claprood, will co-host the Citrus-Rio Hondo tournament Friday through Sunday.
Mt. SAC , under Coach Art Mazmanian, plays host to Moorpark on Friday and travels to Moorpark on Saturday.
Pasadena, under first-year Coach Tom Cano, opens Tuesday against at Antelope Valley.
COLLEGES
The Azusa Pacific men’s basketball team saw two streaks end last week when it was defeated by Westmont, 68-67, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at Westmont.
The loss ended the Cougars’ 18-game conference win streak and overall 10-game winning streak.
Azusa Pacific (19-3, 4-1 in the GSAC) plays host to Southern California College on Friday.

Cal State Los Angeles entered the week in second place in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. after losing to defending NCAA Division II champions Cal State Bakersfield, 70-67.
The loss left Cal State L.A.’s record at 9-11, but they are 4-2 in the CCAA. Bakersfield improved to 17-3 and 5-1.
Cal Poly Pomona improved to 11-9 and 2-4 by defeating Cal State San Bernardino, 83-72.

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team, ranked 14th in Division II, appears destined for its 13th consecutive CCAA championship.
The Broncos, under Coach Darlene May, improved to 17-3 and 5-0 by defeating UC Riverside, 73-58.
Center Mildred Conston scored 19 points for Pomona. Jennifer Harney came off the bench and made four three-point baskets. She finished with 15 points.
Pomona plays at Cal State Los Angeles (5-11, 2-2) Saturday night.

Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team opened the season ranked 16th by Collegiate Baseball magazine.
The Broncos return several players, including senior Tom Eide, who batted .348 in 1993. Eide moves from center field to shortstop.
Pomona might have the tallest pitching staff in college baseball with 6-foot-8 senior Mike Kurnik and 6-7 senior Geoff Blake.
The Broncos, under Coach Chuck Belk, play host to Southern California College today, travel to Azusa Pacific on Friday and play host to Cal Baptist in a doubleheader on Saturday.
PREP ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Joeanna and Joyce Garcia, San Gabriel--The Garcia sisters, who are twins and the Matadors’ starting guards, helped San Gabriel improve to 16-4 and 6-0 in the Almont League with victories over Alhambra and Keppel.
Joyce scored 24 points and Joeanna added 19 in a 65-34 win over Alhambra. Joeanna and Joyce each scored 11 points in a 66-39 victory over Keppel.
COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Brandon Bryce, Cal Poly Pomona--Bryce, a sophomore, made a school-record seven three-point baskets and finished with a career-high 25 points and had 10 rebounds as the Broncos defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 83-72, in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game.

Westridge School in Pasadena is sponsoring a summer opportunities fair on Feb. 12. The fair will include exhibitors from sports camps, wilderness adventures and traditional summer camps that feature many recreational opportunities. Information: (818) 799-1153, Ext. 248. . . . Chris Gaskill of San Gabriel was part of a flag football team that played a team of ex-pros to a 14-14 tie Saturday in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Gaskill, who gained participation in the event by winning a local contest, caught four passes for 60 yards and also made three tackles. The game was a promotional event sponsored by a liquor company.
The Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a wrestling club and tournament competition for participants 10 to 18 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Rowland Heights Park in Rowland Heights. The city of Azusa is offering a certification class for softball umpires that will be staged Tuesday nights. The first class is scheduled for Tuesday. Classes will continue through March 15. Graduates are eligible to umpire games for pay in the local adult softball leagues. The cost is $26 for Azusa residents and $30 for non-residents. Information: (818) 334-2611, Ext. 266.
The San Gabriel Valley Kids Wrestling Club is conducting sign-ups on Mondays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the small gym at Arroyo High in El Monte. The program, open to boys and girls 5 to 14, teaches fundamentals and offers the opportunity to compete in tournaments. Information: (818) 338-6864.
