Jim Betzsold had a two-out, run-scoring double in the 11th inning to lift Cal State Fullerton to an 8-7 victory over Stanford in a nonconference baseball game Sunday at Stanford.

Betzsold’s double scored Bret Hemphill, who had doubled with two outs.

Ted Silva (1-0), a sophomore right-hander, completed four innings of shutout relief for the victory. Cal State Fullerton (2-1) took two of three games in the season-opener for both teams.

Cal State Fullerton, ranked sixth by Baseball America, took a 6-0 lead with three runs each in the first and second innings.

The Titans built their lead because of a sloppy Cardinal defense. Stanford, ranked 12th in the same poll, made three errors that led to four unearned runs.

Dante Powell had two hits, scored two runs, drove in one and stole four bases. Craig Skyberg had a hit and also scored two runs for Cal State Fullerton.

Dan Ricabal, 11-3 last season as a starter for the Titans, failed to hold the early 6-0 lead. He allowed four runs in the third to cut the Titan lead to 6-4. Cal State Fullerton scored in the fourth to take a 7-4 lead but Ricabal allowed three more runs in the fifth. He gave up six earned runs, walked three and struck out four.

Matt Wagner replaced Ricabal to start the sixth and had three strikeouts in two shutout innings before Silva came in.

Tom Reimers (0-1) allowed seven hits and one run in 7 2/3 innings of relief but took the loss as Stanford fell to 1-2.

The Titans play UC Riverside at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in their home opener. Cal State Fullerton then plays host to Arizona for a three-game series starting at 7 p.m. Friday.
