Buffalo’s Grief Is Wall Street’s Joy
On Wall Street, everybody is a Dallas Cowboys fan.
The Cowboys’ victory Sunday guarantees that stocks will rise this year--at least if you believe the “Super Bowl indicator.â€
Historically, a victory by the National Conference team has usually coincided with an up year in the stock market. A win by the American Conference has usually signaled a down year. That holds for 24 out of 27 years.
For purposes of the indicator, original NFL franchises such as Pittsburgh are still considered National teams, even though they were moved to the American Conference after the NFL and AFL merged in 1970. That stacks the odds in the indicator’s favor.
Nonetheless, superstitious Wall Street craves a National victory. At least the Bills can say they lost for a good cause.
