A man who allegedly pointed a gun at plainclothes police officers in South-Central Los Angeles was shot and critically wounded by one of the officers Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.
Stephen Meigham, 21, was driving along Avalon Boulevard next to the unmarked patrol car when he said something to the officers and pointed a handgun at them, said Lt. William Hall, who heads the Los Angeles Police Department’s officer-involved shooting section.
“It appeared that Meigham was upset,” Hall said.
Officer Ray Morales fired six rounds out the window of the police car at Meigham, who drove on for a short distance until he ran into a parked car, Hall said.
Meigham was taken to California Medical Center at 14th and Hope streets, where he was being treated for bullet wounds to the head and a hand.
“There is no explanation as to why Meigham pointed the gun at officers,” Hall said. “It is also not known if Meigham even knew they were officers.”
