CERRITOS : City to Pay More for School Gym Expansion
- Share via
The city has agreed to pay an additional $524,000 to expand the Cerritos High School gymnasium for use by students and residents.
The city previously agreed to provide $2 million for the expansion, which would double the size of the gymnasium by adding a second regulation-size basketball court. The lowest bid on the project, however, was about $2.5 million. Officials will draw the additional money from the city’s reserve fund, said Mayor John Crawley. ABC Unified School District will provide maintenance and upkeep.
The school district will use the enlarged gym on school days until 5:15 p.m., when the city will take over until 10 p.m. On non-school days and in the summer, the city will be able to use the gym from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Construction is expected to begin in about three weeks and to be completed in about a year.
