Japan Surplus Sets Record: The surplus, a chronic sore spot in Japan’s economic relationship with the rest of the world, soared to $120.40 billion last year, the Finance Ministry reported. The 12.9% increase over the 1992 level came despite a sharp rise in the value of the yen, which tends to weaken sales of Japanese exports and increase sales of more affordable foreign goods in Japan. Japan’s trade surplus with the United States registered a third straight increase in 1993, rising 15.2% to $50.19 billion.
