EARTHQUAKE / THE LONG ROAD BACK : Quake Facts
Here are some facts and figures on Monday’s magnitude 6.6 earthquake:
* AFTERSHOCKS: The Southland has been shaken by hundreds of aftershocks since the main quake struck at 4:31 a.m. The largest measured 5.5, at 3:40 p.m. Monday. The most significant Tuesday was magnitude 4.7, at 7:23 a.m.
* DEATHS: 40
* DAMAGE: Billions of dollars.
* INJURIES: More than 2,300 people were treated and released at hospitals; about 530 were admitted for care.
* CURFEW: The need for an 11 p.m.-to-dawn curfew for Los Angeles will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis.
* ARRESTS: The Los Angeles Police Department took 73 people into custody in the 24-hour period ending at 3 a.m. Tuesday, an extremely low figure.
* HOMELESS: 3,500 people stayed in 22 Red Cross shelters overnight Monday, while thousands more camped out in tents and parks. The campers included 700 people who spent the night outside a Red Cross shelter in San Fernando.
* UTILITIES: 20,000 Southern California Gas Co. customers were without service. The Department of Water and Power is in the process of restoring power to 60,000 customers in the San Fernando Valley, while 50,000 customers were without water.
* CLOSURES: All Los Angeles Unified School District campuses are closed today. Some government offices, courts, banks, libraries and post offices remain closed.
