Foreman Didn’t Speak for All Jurors
* In the interest of moderating the tone of the article “Brothers Win $105,000 in 0.C. Police Suit†(Jan. 7); the article could have made it more evident that the jury foreman, who seemed to feel that this case was based on race, was expressing his personal opinion in using the terms “outrageous†and “Gestapo tactics.â€
The majority of the jury felt that the officers involved acted without malice or malicious intent but erred in the judgment of a situation. Race was not seen to be an issue. It took some time to moderate the (unseemly) amounts that a few of the jurors suggested. Fortunately, the jury system is made up of “12 good men (and women)†and cooler heads prevailed.
