Davis Love III capped a 12-under-par 60--a score bettered only twice in PGA Tour history--with his third eagle of the day and surged into a four-stroke lead Friday in the Hawaiian Open.

A 253-yard three-wood to the par-five 18th set up a downhill, 10-foot eagle putt.

He also scored eagles on the first and ninth holes and had six birdies in the round that fell a stroke short of the 59s compiled by Al Geiberger in Memphis in 1977 and Chip Beck in the 1990 Las Vegas Invitational.

Love’s round in near-ideal conditions gave him a 128 total, 16 under par, for two rounds.

“When I was putting for eagle on the 13th, I was thinking, ‘If I make this, I have a shot at 59,’ †Love said. “That’s the only time I lost focus.â€
