NHL ROUNDUP : Coffey Gets His 900th Assist, Red Wings Win Again, 9-3
Defenseman Paul Coffey had four assists, including the 900th of his career, and Sergei Fedorov and Vyacheslav Kozlov had two goals and two assists each to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 9-3 rout of the Dallas Stars at Detroit on Friday night.
Coffey, who played with Edmonton, Pittsburgh and the Kings before going to Detroit, became only the sixth player in NHL history and the first defenseman to reach the 900-assist level.
The Red Wings are 12-2-2 in their last 16 games, and 9-1-1 in their last 11 at home.
The teams alternated goals through the first period, before Detroit took control in the second.
New York Islanders 5, Montreal 2--Brad Dalgarno scored twice and Ron Hextall ended a personal five-game losing streak by stopping 35 shots at Uniondale, N.Y.
The Islanders, amid an up-and-down season, continued their mastery over Montreal, winning their third consecutive meeting this season.
New Jersey 5, Washington 2--The Devils attained a measure of revenge against Washington goaltender Rick Tabaracci, who had shut them out five days earlier, chasing him from the net in the second period at Landover, Md.
Scott Stevens had two goals and Martin Brodeur stopped 30 shots for the Devils.
New York Rangers 5, Philadelphia 2--Adam Graves and Mike Gartner scored goals in the first 5:04 and Mike Richter made 22 saves to lead the Rangers at New York.
The Rangers ended a three-game losing streak.
Brent Fedyk scored twice for the Flyers, who had been 5-0-1 against their Atlantic Division rivals since a 3-1 loss at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 4, 1992.
Vancouver 2, Ottawa 2--Sylvain Turgeon scored a power-play goal for the Senators at 13:53 of the second period to force a tie at Vancouver.
Vancouver outshot Ottawa, 24-8, in the third period and overtime, but goalie Darrin Madeley denied them.
