In varsity South Coast League games:
Mater Dei 68, Dana Hills 49--Schea Cotton scored 22 points for Mater Dei (16-0, 1-0) and Clay McKnight had 17, including three three-pointers.
The Monarchs jumped out to a 20-6 lead in the first quarter, but Dana Hills made one run in the third, closing to within nine points before the Monarchs poured it on again.
“There are 20-point losses that are ugly and there are 20-point losses that aren’t so ugly,” Dana Hills Coach Jim Wilson said. “I was happy that our kids didn’t quit.”
Capistrano Valley 79, El Toro 67--Todd Thornton scored 19 points and Dinari Bates 18 to lead Capistrano Valley (12-4, 1-0). Thornton made five three-point field goals.
Jim Lewis scored 18 points for El Toro (8-8, 0-1), but the Chargers made only nine of 17 free throws.
San Clemente 54, Mission Viejo 50--Graham Gary scored 14 points, including seven of nine free throws in the fourth quarter, to lead San Clemente (10-5, 1-0).
Ty Kalkolsh scored 15, 12 on four three-pointers, for Mission Viejo (6-8, 0-1).
