Whittier : Affordable Housing Project Construction to Begin Soon

Construction of a nine-unit condominium project for moderate- and low-income families near Whittier Park is scheduled to begin in this month.
The City Council recently approved $365,000 in redevelopment funds to help finance the project, which will be developed and partially funded by a Whittier bank and an area housing association.
The cost of the project is estimated at $1.4 million.
The condominiums, which will be in three buildings, will replace dilapidated structures near the intersection of Union Avenue and Penn Street.
Development of the condominiums is the final phase of a project to help a neighborhood hit by crime. Earlier efforts, which included cleanup campaigns and renovations of Whittier Park, have reduced graffiti, litter and gang activity, City Manager Tom Mauk said.
La Habra Neighborhood Housing Services and the Whittier-based Quaker City Federal Savings will build the condominiums and provide financing to residents.
The council voted 4 to 0 on Dec. 21 to approve the development, which has a completion date of next January. Councilman Michael Sullens was absent.
