County Clears Way for Canyon Housing

Orange County supervisors Tuesday paved the way for the development of six housing sites in Trabuco Canyon by rejecting an appeal that the construction would damage the area’s rural character.
Supervisor Gaddi H. Vasquez said concerns for the 14-acre project, located along the southern side of the Hamilton Truck Trail, were unfounded because 70% of the land involved would be dedicated as open space by the ownership group known as Gooding/LaPraire/Thomassen.
“The idea that the specific plan for the area is being gutted is simply not supported,” Vasquez said. “This project has undergone extensive review. . . . It provides for reasonable and sensible development.”
Ray Chandos of the Rural Canyons Conservation Fund, however, said the development represents an “extreme and controversial” interpretation of the county’s policy to preserve the rural nature of the canyon area.
“You can imagine the visual impacts,” Chandos said.
The supervisors’ unanimous vote affirms separate approvals by the Foothill/Trabuco Review Board and the Orange County Planning Commission.
