OUTLOOK
Team speed, depth and athleticism are the Chargers’ strengths. They had a very strong showing during the summer league. Only two seniors are on the team, so experience could play into the outcome of the league race, but the five newcomers come from a junior varsity team that went 20-5, and Verhulst showed surprising poise over the summer. Philman averaged 11 points and a team-high 11 rebounds last year as a freshman. She can touch the rim, and has won the heptathlon gold medal in AAU National Junior Olympics three of the past four years. Sonya Bryant, a 5-10 sophomore forward who started last year, transferred to Marina. The Chargers have the option of going with a tall or short lineup and still remain effective. Abraham is emphasizing defense in this, his fifth season. “We don’t want to have to rely on scoring so many points to win,” he said. “We’re still going to try to outscore people, but we want to keep constant pressure on our opponents.”
