NEW YORK — Basketball’s Michael Jordan may have retired, but he will still be the world’s highest-paid athlete this year.
Jordan, who has product-promotion contracts, will make an estimated $36 million, according to Forbes magazine’s annual list of the world’s 40 highest-paid sports stars. Only about $4 million will be from his Bulls salary for the 1992-93 season.
Second on the list was former boxing heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe, who took home $25 million. Auto racing was almost as lucrative, with Formula One drivers Ayrton Senna of Brazil and Frenchman Alain Prost ranking No. 3 and No. 4.
Another basketball star is moving up fast in Jordan’s tracks. Shaquille O’Neal, of the Orlando Magic, leaped into the No. 6 spot.
Making his debut on the “Super 40,” Forbes said O’Neal will earn an estimated $15.2 million--still less than half of Jordan’s take.
