Jim McMahon will start for Minnesota Sunday against Detroit. Viking Coach Dennis Green decided to bench Sean Salisbury because the team was 1-4 with him as the starting quarterback. The Vikings were 4-2 with McMahon. Salisbury averaged 270 passing yards to McMahon’s 176 and 7.2 yards per attempt to McMahon’s 5.5. Salisbury has eight touchdown passes to McMahon’s three. With McMahon at quarterback, the team averaged 14 points; with Salisbury, the average was 19. . . . Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre, who suffered a bruised thigh in Sunday’s victory over Tampa Bay, said he plans to play Sunday against the Chicago Bears. “It’s kind of a day-to-day deal,” he said.

Leon Lett said he was sorry for his Thanksgiving Day blunder in a statement released by the Dallas Cowboys. “I’m deeply hurt for my teammates because of the judgment error I made at the end of last week’s game,” Lett said. “In my efforts to try and help our team win, I made a poor decision. Hopefully, my performance in the future will in some small way make up for my mistake.”

Lett tried to recover a blocked field goal in the final seconds of the 16-14 loss to Miami. After he accidentally kicked the ball, the Dolphins recovered at the Dallas one and Miami’s Pete Stoyanovich kicked the game-winning field goal.
