Virginia expects big things this season with four starters back from a team that advanced to the NCAA tournament’s round of 16 last season.

But No. 12 Virginia got off to a rocky start Monday night as Connecticut handed the Cavaliers a 77-36 defeat at Charlottesville, Va.

“I want to apologize to everybody who was here tonight for having to sit through something like that,†said Virginia Coach Jeff Jones, whose team committed 20 turnovers and made only 12 of 53 shots (23%). “We stunk the place up.â€

Kevin Ollie had 12 of his 16 points in the first half as Connecticut (2-0) built a 29-point lead.

No. 2 Arkansas 93, Murray State 67--The Razorbacks took a 13-0 lead en route to a season-opening victory in their new arena at Fayetteville, Ark.

Australia 93, No. 3 Kansas 82--Anthony Ronaldson scored 26 points to lead the Australians in a double-overtime exhibition victory at Lawrence, Kan.

No. 4 North Carolina 109, Fort Bragg AAU 70--Six North Carolina players scored more than 10 points in the exhibition victory at Chapel Hill, N.C.

No. 5 Michigan 84, Cleveland State 71--The Wolverines (2-0) overcame a nine-point deficit for the victory at Ann Arbor, Mich.

No. 8 Oklahoma State 94, Oral Roberts 52--The Cowboys (3-0) scored the last 22 points of the first half en route to the victory at Stillwater, Okla.

No. 15 Minnesota 107, Mississippi Valley State 63--Voshon Lenard of Minnesota (3-2) had three three-point baskets during a 26-2 opening run at Minneapolis.

No. 19 Arizona 106, Baylor 79--Khalid Reeves scored 21 points to lead the Wildcats to a season-opening victory at Tucson.

No. 22 George Washington 85, American University 50--Sophomore center Yinka Dare scored 21 points at Washington to lead the Colonials in the season opener for both teams.

No. 23 Cincinnati 73, Wyoming 49--Cincinnati (2-1) used a 16-2 run en route to the victory at Cincinnati.
