Judge Upholds State Ban on ‘Copycat’ Assault Guns

A judge Monday upheld the constitutionality of California’s law banning military-style assault weapons, saying the state has the power to block the sale of “copycat†guns.

Superior Court Judge Ronald Robie issued the decision in response to a lawsuit filed by Colt Manufacturing Co. The suit was in response to the state Justice Department’s efforts in March, 1991, to have the Colt Sporter--described by law enforcement officials as a redesigned, renamed AR-15--added to the list of banned assault weapons.

State Atty. Gen. Dan Lungren said Robie’s decision was “precisely the ruling we were looking for.â€
