TOP PERFORMERS
Wide receiver Brad Melsby caught six passes for 124 yards and three touchdowns as Los Alamitos (12-0) rolled to a 34-8 quarterfinal victory against Edison in a Division II contest. Quarterback Mike Good completed 15 of 22 passes for 175 yards and three touchdowns to lead the top-seeded Griffins.
Sophomore Michael Graham gained 114 yards in 21 carries for the Chargers.
Rancho Alamitos junior Kevin Allen rushed for 254 yards and two touchdowns and threw for another score in a 28-13 victory over Baldwin Park Sierra Vista in a Division VII game.
Allen started the playoffs as a wide receiver, but in seven quarters of filling in for the injured Moukda Choulamany, he has run for 465 yards and four touchdowns.
Jason Covarrubias had never carried the ball for more than 50 yards in a game, but he had two rushes of that distance Friday in a 28-14 victory over Pomona Ganesha in a Division VI matchup. He ran 51 yards to set up the tying touchdown, and went 94 yards for the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter. The senior finished with 14 carries for 209 yards.
Irvine running back Tony Mathis carried 18 times for 202 yards and a touchdown as the Vaqueros defeated Foothill, 27-24, in a Division IV game.
The Knights’ only losses this season were to Sea View League teams--Tustin, Woodbridge and Newport Harbor to open their season and now Irvine to end it.
J.C. Pintsak passed for 196 yards and two touchdowns as Trabuco Hills defeated Bellflower, 33-8, in a Division VIII game.
Chris Yadrick rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown, and teammate Justin Flagg added 86 yards on the ground and another score to lead Huntington Beach to a 24-10 victory over Cerritos Gahr, putting the Oilers into the Division II semifinals.
It marks the first time since 1946 that Huntington Beach has reached the football semifinals.
GIMME A . . . BRAWL!
Tempers flared at the Edison-Los Alamitos game. Heated words were exchanged. A brawl almost erupted. And this was among the cheerleaders .
Edison cheerleaders reacted angrily when Los Alamitos cheerleaders attempted--with some success--to destroy a banner the Edison girls were displaying on the field at halftime of Los Alamitos’ 34-8 victory. Several Edison cheerleaders charged a group of Los Alamitos cheerleaders, an argument ensued, and referees had to separate the sides.
Edison fans chanted, “No class! No class!”
Game, Los Alamitos.
Point, Edison.
ON DEFENSE
Los Alamitos linebacker Marc Albert intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble to lead the Griffins’ defense, which forced four turnovers in a 34-8 victory over Edison.
Corey Sides had four interceptions, one for a touchdown, as Costa Mesa defeated Riverside Norte Vista, 35-12, in a Division VIII game. Binh Tran gained 152 yards and scored a touchdown in 35 carries for the Mustangs.
ON THE RECORD
“I don’t think they’ll have much of a chance if Los Alamitos plays like they did against us tonight. They’re about as good of a team that I’ve seen in a while.”
--Dave White, Edison coach, when asked about how his Sunset League rivals, Fountain Valley or Huntington Beach, would fare against the top-seeded Griffins.
