1 Killed, 1 Seriously Hurt in Car Crash
SAN CLEMENTE — An 83-year-old Oceanside man was killed Friday when his car crossed all southbound lanes of the Santa Ana Freeway and careened down an off-ramp embankment, the California Highway Patrol said.
Albert I. Gale sustained massive injuries when his 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass swerved across the freeway just south of the Avenida Presidio underpass, jumped several curbs and rolled down an embankment, where it struck a tree. Gale suffered massive injuries and was pronounced dead at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo.
CHP Officer J. C. Graul said he did not know what caused Gale to swerve. The car was traveling at 55-60 m.p.h., he said, and no other vehicles were involved.
A passenger in the car, Jennie Gale, 79, also of Oceanside, suffered moderate injuries in the crash. She was reported in serious condition at Mission Hospital. Both the Gales were wearing seat belts and shoulder restraints, the CHP said.
