LEO CARRILLO BEACH : Authorities Identify Drowning Victim
A surfer who drowned off Leo Carrillo State Beach in Ventura County was identified Friday as Jack Daniel Martin, but authorities were not certain of the man’s address.
Martin, 33, may have been living inside his van, where authorities found papers that identified him, Ventura County Deputy Coroner Mitch Breese said. Relatives in Michigan were notified of his death but did not know where Martin lived, Breese said.
Martin died of asphyxiation caused by drowning, Breese said. A passerby saw Martin floating in the water Thursday morning, still leashed to his surfboard. Los Angeles County lifeguards were called and tried to resuscitate him.
Ventura County sheriff’s detectives Friday were trying to verify where Martin lived, officials said.
