OUTLOOK
Last year’s league champions will be hard-pressed to repeat after losing 10 players to graduation. Santa Margarita gains Scoggin, however, who transferred from Capistrano Valley and will step into the point-guard spot. “We lost a lot of people,” DeBusk said. “What’s going to have to happen when we get intact is hope the team gels and familiarizes with each other. I’m willing to be patient. We’ll take it step by step and hopefully have a decent team by January.” The Finneran twins will probably carry most of the scoring and rebounding burden. Brad Finneran was the team’s leading shooter last year, making 56% of his shots; Brian was third at 52%. DeBusk said Yankoff, the quarterback for Santa Margarita, will be a solid perimeter player. “He’s very athletic, he’s strong, and a competitive guy. You put those three together, you’ve got a guy who can play a number of sports and be competitive at them.” Most league coaches tab the Eagles for first or second in the race; DeBusk is not so sure, citing Tustin and Newport Harbor’s strong cast of returners. “If we can get what we practice into games, the wins and losses will take care of themselves,” he said.
