OUTLOOK
Keith, who lost four starters from last year’s third-place squad, does not feel his latest cast of Vaqueros is ready to contend at the varsity level. “We’re a very inexperienced team,” he said. “We were not a good basketball team this past summer, winning only a few games. Even now as we enter the season, we are still very much a team in search of our identity and strengths. Our major goal is to learn how to compete at varsity-level intensity and maturity.” Foster, who started the last half of 1992-93, averaged 6.5 points and is Irvine’s top returning scorer. Keith expects increased production from Corbin, who missed all but nine games of his junior year due to illness. Keith said he does not anticipate making playoff plans. “Our horse is so dark it’s called midnight,” he said. “There’s no great teams, but many good ones. I look for Santa Margarita, Tustin, Woodbridge and Newport Harbor to be (in) the upper echelon.” If the Vaqueros fail to qualify for postseason play, it would be the first time in Keith’s six years that he’s missed the playoffs.
