Malibu : Free Fire Debris Removal
City Manager David Carmany announced Monday that the city will hire two contractors to remove debris from properties devastated by recent fires at no charge to property owners.
The city will use federal funds to pay for the cleanup project, which begins Dec. 6, Carmany said. The work is expected to be finished by the end of the year.
The city is also taking steps to make it easier to rebuild, he said. Building permit fees will be waived for residents in burned-out areas. A special City Council meeting will be held Monday to consider an ordinance intended to streamline the permit and approval process for owners who want to rebuild something other than a replica of the destroyed house.
The city is also having community forums for fire victims to provide information on water accessibility, fire-resistant building materials, vegetation, road access and the city’s rebuilding process.
The meetings are from 7 to 9 p.m. next Thursday in the Pepperdine University School of Law, Room C and again Dec. 7 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the university’s chapel.
