THOUSAND OAKS : Plan for Theater Complex Advances

The Thousand Oaks City Council Tuesday night voted unanimously to allow the Janss Corp.’s applications for a development permit and a waiver of building height restrictions to be considered by city staff members simultaneously.

The corporation wants to build a nine-screen Mann movie theater as part of a major renovation of the Janss Mall. The corporation is asking the city to waive city rules limiting building heights, as the multiplex would exceed the municipal code’s 35-foot building height limit by 10 feet.

Janss officials have said the extra height will help preserve the mall’s landscaping and open-space areas by eliminating the need to expand the mall’s perimeter.

Considering the development permit and the height variance together saves time and aggravation, said Steve Phillips, Janss’ project manager for the mall.

“If everyone can do everything at once,†he said, “it makes it easier for everybody--us, the planning staff, and the elected officials.â€
