OUTLOOK
With Campuzano as the only full-time starter back, Van Cleave is worried about his team’s inexperience. “When you have a young team, you have hesitation,” he said. “If they get into it and not worry about mistakes, they’ll be fine.” Van Cleave will ask a lot of Campuzano, who plays much bigger than 6 feet and is the team’s only established scorer. Another key for the Argonauts will be how quickly Lewis comes along at point guard. He played junior varsity last year and takes over for Jim Sebreros. “He’s not afraid to assert himself,” Van Cleave said. “He’s the best leader I’ve had in a while.” Smith, who improved dramatically over the summer, will play alongside Lewis and Campuzano in Van Cleave’s three-guard offense. “If Dave Smith comes through, he could be an all-league player,” Van Cleave said. Like last year, an Argonaut weakness could be a lack of size--Garden Grove’s tallest player is 6-4. With large teams such as Kennedy and Pacifica in the Garden Grove League, that could pose a problem. Still, Van Cleave is excited about his team’s prospects. “It may take us a while to get going,” he said. “But we’ll be in the thick of it.”
