OUTLOOK
The defending league champions figure to finish near the top again, led by first-team all-leaguers Shah and Gadd. Shah, a point guard, averaged six assists. Gadd averaged 10 points and nine rebounds. Sand said they both know his system impeccably. Gamst played shooting guard her freshman year, small forward last year, and moves to power forward this season. “She’s a forward who can shoot from outside and do the things twos and threes are expected to do,” Sand said. He has the luxury of using any of seven experienced players in his rotation, and said all are well-rounded and understand the game. Although they did not start, How and Bloomingdale received significant playing time last season. Sand says defense will be the key if his Warriors are to repeat. “Being able to have a consistent, tough defense to rely on every night is vital,” he said. Sand said he enjoyed watching his teams improve during his first two years at Troy; they were 15-7 his first year, 22-7 last year. “I think we’ve improved a great deal each year, and I’m hoping we’re going to have a decent rate of improvement this year.” He’ll probably need it to hold off La Habra and Fullerton.
