Burbank’s Kemp Resigns Post, Cites Teaching Conflict

Dave Kemp has resigned after one season as football coach at Burbank High, citing a conflict with his teaching schedule.

Better known as a track coach for the past 28 years at Burbank, he assumed the football job as a last-minute replacement for Randy Stage, who abruptly resigned last summer. Kemp, 54, coached the Bulldogs to a 2-8 record.

“I think my time has come and gone as a football coach,” Kemp said. “I knew when I first came up to the varsity it was going to be my last year no matter what. My only regret is I wish the kids would have had a better won-lost record.”

Burbank finished last in the Foothill League at 0-4, losing by lopsided scores to Hart (56-7), Saugus (49-14), Canyon (41-13) and Burroughs (31-6).

The school will begin taking applications immediately for a replacement, said Frank Kallem, Burbank’s athletic director.

John Hazelton, an assistant at Montclair Prep, said he has been contacted by a member of the Burbank Unified School District regarding the position. Hazelton said he is interested.
