Kuwaiti and U.S. troops began a monthlong exercise Monday, the latest in a series designed to show U.S. commitment to the emirate’s security.

U.S. Embassy sources said the exercise had been planned for a year and was not a reaction to recent shooting incidents along the disputed Kuwait-Iraq border.

The United Nations redrew the border between Iraq and Kuwait after the 1991 Persian Gulf War. Iraq objects to the new demarcation that gave Kuwait part of the Rumaila oil field and most of the port of Umm al Qasr.

The U.S. Embassy sources said there have been more than 40 such exercises since Kuwait signed a defense pact with the United States after a multinational force drove Iraq out of Kuwait in 1991.
