COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titans Upset Fresno State in NCAA Soccer Playoffs

Four players scored as Cal State Fullerton took advantage of a depleted Fresno State team to win, 4-0, in an NCAA tournament men’s soccer game Sunday at Fresno.

Fresno State was ranked 15th in the nation; Fullerton was unranked.

But the Bulldogs were without starters Mario Sanchez (injury) and Donovan Martinez, who got a red card in Fresno State’s previous game and had to miss this game because of NCAA rules.

“The key was Fresno missing two starters,” Fullerton Coach Al Mistri said. “If the two were on the field, we probably would still be playing at 0-0.

Cal State Fullerton (14-6) dominated the flow most of the time but didn’t get its first goal until Matt Bradbury scored off an assist from Paul McDonnell with about 17 minutes left in the second half.

Ken Hesse scored from about 35 yards less than two minutes later. McDonnell and Eddie Soto scored in the final five minutes for Fullerton. Fresno had only two shots and Titan goalkeeper Ken Amman made no saves.

Fullerton advances to play San Diego, which upset UCLA, 4-2. San Diego beat the Titans, 2-1, earlier this season. The game most likely will take place next Saturday or Sunday. The day, time and location have yet to be determined.

In the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo tournament:

UC Irvine 6, Pacific 4--Matt Maunz scored four goals as Irvine won the third-place game at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach. Kurt Elder scored with 1:04 left in the first half to give fifth-ranked UC Irvine a 3-2 lead. Pacific is third in the nation. The Anteaters lost to California, 10-5, in a semifinal earlier Sunday.

In the ITA Southern California women’s tennis regional:

Top-seeded player wins--Jane Chi of UCLA, the No. 1-seeded singles player, beat Pepperdine’s Myriam Berthe, 6-3, 7-5, to take the singles title at UC Irvine. Meredith Geiger and Kori Davidson of Arizona State beat Arizona’s Michelle Oldham and Celine Verdier, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4, for the doubles title.
