PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Brethren Christian Earns Title Tie, Playoff Spot
Brethren Christian secured a tie for first place in the Olympic League and a playoff berth by defeating Cerritos Valley Christian, 13-10, in its final regular-season football game Saturday night at Artesia High.
Brethren Christian improved to 8-2 and 4-1 in the league, the same as Ontario Christian, but will be the league’s higher-seeded playoff team because of a 21-14 victory in a head-to-head matchup Oct. 23. Calvary Chapel will be the league’s third-seeded team.
Valley Christian is 7-3 and 2-3.
Brethren Christian scored first with six minutes to go in the half on Ryan Babcock’s 37-yard interception return.
Valley Christian answered with a 33-yard field goal by Jeremy DeBie to make it 7-3.
Brethren Christian added to its advantage, taking a 13-3 lead, when Reggie Davis connected on a 17-yard pass to Andy Brown with three minutes left in the half.
Neither team scored in the third quarter.
In the Southern Section Small Division eight-man football playoffs:
Liberty Christian 28, Riverside Bethel Christian 14--Dave Vacarro did it all for the Minutemen, scoring touchdowns on a 40-yard interception return, a 33-yard run and a 20-yard pass, and lead the team in tackles with 14 in the first-round game.
Liberty Christian quarterback Carl Warmack threw for 134 yards and two touchdowns.
Liberty Christian (5-3) will face top-seeded Bloomington Christian next Saturday.
