Lakewood : Mall Bans Smoking in Areas Outside Stores
Lakewood Center Mall has banned smoking, citing the health hazards of secondhand smoke. The mall introduced a no-smoking policy earlier this month, and is the latest shopping center to adopt such a rule. In April, Los Cerritos Center in Cerritos instituted a no-smoking policy for the same reason. Malls in Huntington Beach, Pasadena, Northridge and Woodland Hills have enacted similar policies recently.
Signs have been posted at entrances and inside the Lakewood mall advising shoppers of the new policy. Security officers and other mall employees are handing out information about the rule and asking people to not smoke while shopping.
The no-smoking rule applies only to common areas inside the mall, which has 230 stores and covers 155 acres at Lakewood and Del Amo boulevards. Individual stores and restaurants are still free to designate smoking areas.
