It’s time for a little franc talk.
France’s central bank has issued a new 50-franc bill bearing the portraits of Antoine de Saint-Exupery and his celebrated fictional hero, the Little Prince.
The new bill is worth nearly $9. It is the first in a series of notes slated to replace existing 100-, 200- and 500-franc bills in the next three years. They will bear the likenesses of Gustave Eiffel, the Lumiere brothers (inventors of the movie camera), and Pierre and Marie Curie, the Nobel-prize-winning scientists.
All will be smaller than their predecessors, making them more in line with other currencies in the European Community, which plans to adopt a single currency by the end of the century.
