Sanchez, San Clemente Win League Titles
Aldaberto Sanchez of Capistrano Valley won the individual title and San Clemente the team title at the South Coast League boys’ cross-country finals Friday at Niguel Regional Park.
Sanchez ran the three-mile course in 15 minutes 25 seconds. Junior Andy Morgan of Mission Viejo finished second in 15:47 and freshman Tomas Mejia of El Toro finished third in 15:53. Aldo Ayala and brother Fernando finished fifth and seventh to help San Clemente to the team title with 55 points. Dana Hills (68) was second and Mater Dei (70) third.
Dana Hills won the girls’ title, scoring 33 points to 60 for El Toro.
In the Sunset League individual girls’ tennis finals:
Meyers wins singles title--Holly Meyers of Marina beat Nina Basica of Fountain Valley, 6-1, 6-2, to win the singles title. In the doubles final, Lindsay McAndress and Michelle Turner of Edison beat teammates Tommie Demaree and Kelly Foster, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, for the title.
In the South Coast League individual finals:
Ruben wins title--Laura Ruben of Mater Dei beat Elizabeth Stevens of Dana Hills, 6-2, 6-1, to take the singles title. El Toro’s Hanaye Johnson and Kate Kunath beat Cheri Ota and Sarah Jarrett of Mater Dei, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0, for the doubles title.
Sunny Hills sweeps--The Lancers won the singles and doubles titles. Dana Rudolph defeated Barbie Bayless, also from Sunny Hills, 6-1, 6-0, to win the singles crown, and Jeannie Lee and Renee Zew captured the doubles title, winning 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2).
In a third-place playoff in Pacific Coast League girls’ volleyball:
Trabuco Hills 3, Estancia 2--Trabuco Hills earned a Southern section playoff berth with a 6-15, 15-5, 4-15, 15-13, 15-13 victory. Whitney Uhl had 20 kills and Holly Falkenhagen added 17 for Trabuco Hills (7-8).
In a third-place playoff in the Empire League:
Cypress 3, Katella 2--Cypress came back from two games down to win, breaking a third-place tie with Katella in the Empire League, 5-15, 10-15, 15-11, 17-15, 16-14, at Esperanza High School. Julie Adams had 19 kills, two aces and three blocks and Jessica Stutts added 10 kills and five blocks to lead the Centurions (6-11, 5-5).
In Orange League water polo:
Western 8, Valencia 5--Four players had two goals each as Western (15-7, 4-4) moved into a third-place tie with Valencia in the final league game. The teams will play at 10 a.m. today at Savanna High School, with the winner earning the league’s final spot in the upcoming Southern Section playoffs.
Trabuco Hills 17, Santa Ana Valley 11--Brian Martz scored six goals and K.C. Nance added five for host Trabuco Hills (16-11). David Vega scored five goals for Santa Ana Valley (18-7).
