PREP ROUNDUP : Laguna Beach’s Bray Wins Second League Tennis Title

Sophomore Michelle Bray of Laguna Beach won her second league singles title, defeating teammate Lindsay Weiss, 6-0, 6-1, in the Pacific Coast League girls’ tennis finals Thursday at Estancia High.

In doubles, Ashley Smith and Tara Kuhnert of Laguna Beach won their second consecutive league title by defeating Melissa Miller and Melissa Gilbert of Laguna Hills, 6-3, 6-4.

In the Century League finals:

DeVera wins--Freshman Faye DeVera of Villa Park won all three of her matches in a round-robin format to win the singles title, and Amy Medlin and Holli Freudenberg swept their matches to give El Modena its first league doubles title.

At the Empire League tennis finals:

Los Alamitos sweeps--Melissa Rosenthal of Los Alamitos won the singles title and teammates Veronica Selby and Michelle Schneider won the doubles title.

In the Olympic League cross-country finals:

Pacheco sets record--Brandon Pacheco of Brethren Christian broke a course record to finish first in 16 minutes 16 seconds on the three-mile course at El Dorado Park.

In the girls’ race, Laurie Juranek finished first on the three-mile course in 19:32 to lead Orange Lutheran to the title.

In the Garden Grove League cross-country finals:

Pacifica wins first title--Freshman Stacey Young won the three-mile race at Mile Square Park in 19:45 to lead Pacifica to its first girls’ cross-country league title.

Henry Hernandez won the boys’ race in 15:47 to help Santiago repeat as league champion.

At the Sea View League cross-country finals:

Santa Margarita sweeps--Matt Huss finished first in 14:58 to lead the Eagles to the boys’ title and Amy Gomez finished second in 17:39 to lead the Eagles to the girls’ championship.

In Century League volleyball:

Foothill 3, El Modena 0--Amie Oberstarr had 11 kills to help Foothill (11-4, 9-1) clinch the league title with a 15-5, 15-13, 15-11 victory over host El Modena (7-3 in league).

In the Empire League:

Sunny Hills 3, Troy 1--Tegan Catlin had 15 kills for visiting Sunny Hills, which won, 15-12, 15-8, 9-15, 15-5. Sunny Hills (12-3, 9-1) shares the league title with La Habra (13-1, 9-1), which defeated Sonora, 15-0, 15-3, 15-7.

In the Olympic League:

Calvary Chapel 3, Cerritos Valley Christian 1--Sara Roberts had 16 kills for Calvary Chapel (13-1, 12-0) which won the league title with a 15-0, 15-5, 14-16, 15-7 victory.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 3, Magnolia 0--Michelle Shear had seven kills to lead Valencia (13-3, 9-1) to its fifth consecutive league championship, 15-5, 15-4, 15-7.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Beach 3, Laguna Hills 0--Hillary Kyle had 12 kills to lead Laguna Beach (14-5, 10-0) to a 15-7, 15-1, 15-11 victory and its eighth consecutive league title.

In Sunset League volleyball:

Fountain Valley 3, Santa Ana 0--Gina Ybarra had nine kills in a 15-4, 15-5, 15-5 victory for Fountain Valley (14-2, 13-1), which clinched the league title.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Costa Mesa 15, Estancia 7--Sam Grayeli and John Naigle each scored four goals for visiting Costa Mesa (19-7, 5-0), which clinched its eighth consecutive league title.
