GARDEN GROVE LEAGUE FOOTBALL : Kennedy Tops Bolsa Grande to Win Title
GARDEN GROVE — Kennedy averaged nearly 19 yards per play in the first half and rolled to a 42-14 victory over Bolsa Grande to clinch the Garden Grove League football title Thursday night at Bolsa Grande.
The Irish (8-1, 5-0 in league) accumulated 317 yards in 17 plays to build a 35-0 halftime advantage. Except for a 24-yard pass from Chris Clark to Charles Marino on the first play from scrimmage, the Irish’s entire attack was on the ground.
Darrin Martineau picked up 150 yards n five carries and Marino added 112 in eight plays, all in the first half, to lead the Irish attack.
Marino scored the first Kennedy touchdown from 13 yards and Martineau added a 32-yard touchdown run to give Kennedy a 14-0 lead.
Ryan Lemberger returned an interception 65 yards with 38 seconds left in the first quarter to increase the Kennedy lead to 21-0.
Kennedy added two touchdowns in the second quarter on a 25-yard run by Marino and an 82-yard run by Martineau.
Brian Baughman, who entered the game as the leading passer in the county, completed 16 of 33 for 199 yards for Bolsa Grande with one interception. He raised his touchdown total to 19 for the season with scoring passes of 23 yards to Love Jefferson and one yard to David Ross.
Alex Matveyenka accounted for Kennedy’s second-half touchdown.
