2-Year Program at Mount St. Mary’s

On behalf of Mount St. Mary’s College (MSMC), Los Angeles, one of three women’s colleges in the Western United States, I would like to clarify a point in “New President is Only Change at Marymount,” (Oct. 24).

Gordon Dillow identifies Marymount as “the only private two-year liberal arts college in California.” Mount St. Mary’s College has been enrolling young women in a two-year associate in arts program at our Doheny campus for more than 30 years.

Like Marymount, MSMC seeks to provide educational opportunities to under-served students--in our case, more than 90% of the students are first-generation college-goers. The “alternative access” program at Doheny, which offers comprehensive support systems to the student who is under-prepared for college, has enjoyed tremendous success. After two years, two-thirds of those who enter this program complete the associate degree or transfer to a baccalaureate program.
