CROSS-COUNTRY ROUNDUP : Century Surprises Laguna Hills

Century placed four runners in the top 10 to win the Pacific Coast League boys’ cross-country final meet Wednesday at Irvine Regional Park.

The Centurions, who were 2-3 during the league season, surprised previously unbeaten Laguna Hills, 38-49. Laguna Hills finished first in the league, Century finished second and Trabuco Hills was third. For Laguna Hills, Wayne Chen finished first in 16 minutes over the three miles and Ryan Miller came in second (16:11. Century’s Miguel Lara finished third in 16:17.

Estancia’s Johann Appell, one of the top runners in the league, dropped out of the race after the two-mile mark because of cold and allergy problems. He was among three runners in the lead pack.

In the Pacific Coast League girls’ finals:

Laguna Hills wins--Heather McGlone, Tiffany Boykin, Mandy Schulecherl and Becky Hagin took the top four spots, in 19:37, 20:00, 20:07 and 20:22, for Laguna Hills.

In the Orange League finals:

Brea-Olinda wins two titles--Brett Saari, Carl Daucher and Roger Wirz finished first, second and third in 16:34, 16:49, 17:09 over three miles at Craig Park leading the Brea-Olinda boys’ team. In the girls’ race, Kelly Daucher finished three miles in 21:01 to lead Brea.
