Maradona Returns as Argentina Ties Australia
In his first game for Argentina since February and his first World Cup match since 1990, Diego Maradona showed he still may have something left.
The 33-year-old forward set up Abel Balbo’s goal with eight minutes to go in the first half Sunday night at Sydney and Argentina tied Australia, 1-1, in the opener of the home-and-home, total-goals series.
Aurelio Vidmar tied the score three minutes after Balbo’s goal.
Argentina, the 1986 World Cup champion, can advance with a victory against Australia at Buenos Aires on Nov. 17. Maradona had been suspended in 1991 for testing positive for cocaine.
