Story Without an Ending

I want to congratulate NBC for its brilliant decision of not showing the concluding episode of its miniseries “Trade Winds� on “Great Escapes.� I really enjoyed wasting my time watching a serial with no ending.

‘Law’ Loses Its Order

I couldn’t believe it when I turned on the premiere of “Law & Order� (NBC, Sept. 29) and saw that NBC had replaced Richard Brooks and Dann Florek with two women. I feel “Law & Order� is one of the finest dramas on TV and both Brooks and Florek played strong characters who really contributed to the show. NBC has diluted an outstanding program.

Good TV in ‘Bakersfield’

Since you receive so many letters criticizing TV shows (and rightly so!), I thought I would throw in a few kudos for a new sitcom, “Bakersfield, P.D.� (Fox). A big kiss and a dozen roses to the producer, director, cast--and especially the writers--for this very witty, sardonic (but warmhearted) look at our fears and faults.

Re: “The New Master� (TV Times, Oct. 3).

Perhaps Elizabeth Mehren may find it “difficult to recall (or, for that matter, to care) ... what Cooke said,� but I’m sure that most “Masterpiece Theatre� (PBS) viewers have no such problems. In any event, we would never hear Alistair Cooke commit Russell Baker’s solecism of “It’s not a room in which people like you and I (sic) are used to working!� I assume we can expect more bad grammar from Mr. Baker. Oh, well, there hasn’t been a good “masterpiece� on the program for years, so who needs a high-calibre host?
