SOUTHWEST ROUNDUP : Texas A&M; Goes to Air, Wins, 34-17

Run-oriented Texas A&M; used a rare weapon, the forward pass, to defeat Baylor, 34-17, Saturday at Waco, Tex., in the 90th meeting between the schools.

Corey Pullig threw two touchdowns and Greg Hill scored twice as No. 13-ranked Texas A&M;, 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the Southwest Conference, won its 18th consecutive SWC game.

Baylor (4-3, 2-2) hasn’t beaten A&M; since 1985.

“It was Corey’s best performance of the season,†A&M; Coach R.C. Slocum said. “He made some good reads and we were able to have a good passing game.â€

Pullig, a sophomore, threw touchdown passes of nine yards to Hill and four yards to Cliff Groce and completed a career-high 21 of 28 passes for 230 yards before 43,716 in Floyd Casey Stadium.

Hill, who also scored on a one-yard run, gained 71 yards in 16 carries. His touchdowns were his first since returning from a four-game suspension last week. Hill was suspended for accepting pay for work he didn’t do.

Houston 28, Southern Methodist 28--Jimmy Klingler threw three touchdown passes, including a 12-yarder to Keith Jack with 7:13 left, to rally the Cougars (1-4-1, 1-1-1) from a 21-0 first-half deficit to a tie with SMU (1-3-2, 1-1-1) in an SWC game at Houston.

The Cougars had a chance to win the game, but Trace Craft missed a 36-yard field-goal try with 1:04 left to play.

Texas Christian 14, Tulane 7--Quarterback Max Knake threw a pair of first-quarter touchdowns and the Horned Frogs (2-5) rode their defense to a sluggish victory over the Green Wave (2-5) in a nonconference game at Fort Worth.
