Crash Kills Former Cornhusker

Former Nebraska tight end Jerry List and his wife were among five killed in a single-engine airplane crash near the northern Nebraska community of Stuart. Jerry and Susan List were 43.
List played in 1970-72 and was a member of two national championship teams. List had 61 catches for 901 yards and five touchdowns in his career.
Also killed were George Medlock and Virginia Medlock, his wife. Medlock was the president of First National Bank of Valentine and List was vice president. The pilot of the airplane, Tod Keller, also was killed in the crash.
Boxing
Kennedy McKinney dominated Jesus Salud to retain his International Boxing Federation junior-featherweight championship at Stateline, Nev., on a unanimous decision. Salud (45-6) absorbed a fierce pounding by McKinney, who remained unbeaten in 25 fights with 15 knockouts.
Anaclet Wamba (42-2) retained his World Boxing Council cruiserweight title against Akim Tafer at Levallois, France, in the first all-French championship fight in nearly 60 years. Tafer, who had a swollen left eye, did not answer the bell for the eighth round.
Golf
Dottie Mochrie, winless this year after being voted LPGA player of the year in 1992, shot a four-under-par 68 to take a two-stroke lead in the World Championship of Women’s Golf at Naples, Fla. Lauri Merten is in second after a 72.
Tom Lehman shot a 65 and moved into a four-way tie for the third-round lead in the Texas Open at San Antonio. Lehman is tied with Dan Forsman, Bob Lohr and Jay Haas.
George Archer shot a six-under 66 to take a one-shot lead over Bob Charles after two rounds of the Senior Gold Rush at Rancho Murieta, Calif.
The United States cruised past host Scotland on victories by John Daly, Payne Stewart and Fred Couples at St. Andrews, and advanced to the semifinals of the $1.5-million Dunhill Cup with a 3-0 record.
In the semifinals, the United States will meet Sweden, the only other unbeaten team. England faces Ireland.
Tennis
Todd Martin moved into the final of the Seiko Super tournament at Tokyo with a victory over Greg Rusedski and will play defending champion Ivan Lendl for the title. Martin outlasted Rusedski, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. Lendl came from behind to defeat Paul Haarhuis of the Netherlands, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
Mary Pierce routed Zina Garrison-Jackson, 6-2, 6-2, at the Porsche Grand Prix at Filderstadt, Germany, to reach her first final since July. Pierce will play Natalia Zvereva.
Auto Racing
Despite almost spinning out during his qualifying lap, Joe Nemechek won the pole for today’s Advance Auto Parts 300 NASCAR Busch Grand National race at Martinsville, Va.
John Force became the second funny-car driver to break the five-second barrier when he did it in qualifying for the NHRA Chief Auto Parts Nationals at the Texas Motorplex.
Miscellany
Brian Tribble, who was acquitted in 1987 on charges of supplying the cocaine that killed University of Maryland basketball star Len Bias, was sentenced to 10 years in prison in an unrelated drug case in Baltimore. . . . Victor Leonenko scored twice in the first half to lead Ukraine to a 2-1 victory over the U.S. national soccer team at High Point, N.C. . . . The Detroit Pistons signed Allan Houston, the second of their two first-round draft picks, to a multiyear contract.
