Manual Arts Staves Off University
Kareem Wafer rushed 13 times for 139 yards with an 18-yard touchdown run to lead Manual Arts to first place in the Metro League with a 28-26 win Friday over University.
Wafer’s backfield mate, Dartanyum Smith, had 126 yards rushing in 15 carries and a 45-yard punt return for a touchdown.
Coming off a 14-14 tie at the half, Manual Arts scored on its first two possessions of the second half. Wafer had a 43-yard run and three plays later threw a 14-yard pass to Brian Beckom to put the Toilers ahead, 22-14.
After University cut the deficit to two, 22-20, Manual Arts scored on a 10-yard pass from Wafer to Timothy Boykins. Smith had a 43-yard run during the 65-yard, nine-play drive.
University had a chance to tie when quarterback Lal Knight scored his second touchdown on a one-yard run with 11:59 left. Knight completed a pass to Quincy Norris for the two-point conversion, but Warriors were penalized for having an ineligible man downfield. During the second attempt, Knight was sacked and the Warriors never threatened again.
