When Leodes Van Buren leaves Newbury Park High, he just might take every state receiving record with him.

For the second consecutive week, the standout Panther senior receiver shattered records as Newbury Park romped over Simi Valley, 41-0, Friday night in a Marmonte League game.

Van Buren caught 10 passes for 170 yards, breaking state records for receptions and yards receiving.

“I just wanted to get it over with,” Van Buren said. “I’m proud because I know a lot of people wish they had a chance to do these things, but all the talk and the questions make it real hard to concentrate on the season.”

Van Buren entered the game needing six catches and 27 yards to break the records. On his second catch of the first quarter, Van Buren surpassed Greg Siwek’s yardage record of 3,498, which he set while playing at Monta Vista of Cupertino from 1988-90.

In the second quarter, Van Buren broke the state record of 216 receptions set by Todd DiCello, who played at Healdsburg from 1983-86.

Van Buren has 221 receptions and 3,642 yards. In a 36-0 rout of Channel Islands last week, Van Buren broke the Southern Section records for receptions and yards receiving set by J.K. McKay, who played at Bishop Amat from 1968-70. Van Buren is the area’s leading receiver with 53 receptions for 860 yards and nine touchdowns.

Van Buren’s next target is McKay’s state touchdown reception record of 48. He is tied for third on the all-time list with 34 and should have a shot at the mark if Newbury Park advances to the playoffs.

But don’t even think about talking to Van Buren about any more records.

“I just want to concentrate on winning,” Van Buren said. “If I wasn’t on such a good team, I wouldn’t even have these records.”

And the Panthers definitely are good--make that very good.

Newbury Park (6-0, 3-0 in league play) is ranked first in The Times’ regional and Southern Section Division III polls. The Pioneers dropped to 3-3, 1-2.

Panther quarterback Keith Smith--the state passing leader--completed 25 of 32 passes for 370 yards and two touchdowns. He had two passes intercepted by Pioneer free safety Nathan Simmons.

Smith opened the scoring with a 54-yard touchdown run. Albert Reddick’s two-yard touchdown run and Smith’s two-point conversion run gave the Panthers a 16-0 lead after one quarter.

Newbury Park scorched the Pioneers for 19 points in the second quarter, capped by a 54-yard touchdown pass play from Smith to Jason Tucker (eight catches, 111 yards, two touchdowns) with four seconds to play that gave the Panthers a 35-0 lead.

Simi Valley junior quarterback Tim Bennett--the brother of former Pioneer standout Eric Bennett (Nevada)--struggled in his first start. Bennett, who was filling in for injured starter Jeremie Watkins, completed his first pass and then misfired on his next seven.

Bennett completed 10 of 22 for 82 yards and was sacked eight times.
