ABC’s ‘Blue’ Period
I wholeheartedly support ABC’s decision to allow the make-believe cops on its make-believe drama, “NYPD Blue,” to make make-believe love. Soap opera actors do it, and so, probably, do the people who watch them.
Perhaps this will lead to a general easing of prevailing censorship, and we may see our make-believe actors reading make-believe intelligent scripts. You never can tell.
In the meantime, this rather sterile advertisement for New York’s finest joins “Roseanne” and “Coach” as truly the finest the producers at ABC can come up with. And to think I grew up watching “Combat,” receiving such an education, for this. They don’t call it ABC for nothing.

Regarding the new “NYPD Blue” show. It’s the best police show I’ve seen in many years, great acting.
Betty Ludwig, Van Nuys
The hype about “NYPD Blue” was more exciting than the program.

Smoking ‘Seinfeld’
I am writing in protest of “Seinfeld’s” (NBC) glorification of cigarettes and cigars on a recent episode. Have tobacco lobbyists or companies bribed NBC into showing cigarette and cigars being smoked by Seinfeld and Kramer? These actions will only increase the number of young people who will start or increase smoking, and make anti-smoking efforts even harder.
