SUNSET LEAGUE : Bertoni Feels Fine in Fountain Valley Victory

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Maybe Westminster should feel fortunate that Scott Bertoni wasn’t feeling his best Friday. As it was, the Fountain Valley quarterback, despite a sore wrist, led the Barons to a 42-9 victory in a Sunset League opener at Huntington Beach High School.

He sprained his right (throwing) wrist during a 28-21 victory over Irvine last week. Bertoni was questionable all week but started because the wrist felt OK. He completed 14 of 18 attempts for 240 yards and a touchdown.

He guided the Barons on six touchdown drives, two in each of the first three quarters, before coming out with a 42-7 lead.

“I thought he could have thrown the ball a little better,” Fountain Valley Coach George Berg said. “Our receivers made some great plays, but under the circumstances, (Bertoni) had a great game.”

Bertoni threw a 10-yard pass to wide receive Jamal Hills to start the scoring with 4 minutes 7 seconds left in the first quarter. Hills had a team-high eight receptions for 171 yards.

John Harcar rushed for two touchdowns and Chuck, his brother, added one for Fountain Valley (4-0, 1-0), the second-ranked team in Orange County.

Jeremy Nicholson also rushed for two touchdowns for the Barons. Westminster is 0-4, 0-1.
