Water consumers now will have to pay an average of 40 cents more on their bills each month to help finance projects to clean up the extensive pollution that plagues the underground water supply for much of the San Gabriel Valley.
The pollution tax, approved Monday by the San Gabriel Basin Water Quality Authority, affects water bills in the area stretching roughly from La Verne to Alhambra.
This year the surcharge will generate $1.8 million, to be used mostly to pay for projects in Baldwin Park, El Monte, South El Monte, Monrovia, and perhaps in Alhambra and the western Puente Basin, which includes parts of the City of Industry.
