The Boston Red Sox put Jeff Russell, third in the American League with 33 saves, on the 15-day disabled list.

Russell suffered an injured left ankle during batting practice in Kansas City on Sunday. Ken Ryan, who finished Monday’s victory over the Texas Rangers, is expected to replace him as the closer.

Top draft pick Alex Rodriguez and the Seattle Mariners agreed on a three-year major league contract worth nearly $1.3 million.

The 18-year-old shortstop was scheduled to start classes at the University of Miami. Had he attended class, the Mariners would have lost their rights to him unless he dropped out before next June’s draft.

Second baseman Jose Lind and the Kansas City Royals agreed to a $5.2 million, two-year contract extension. . . . Bill White, president of the National League, shortened Pittsburgh Pirate Manager Jim Leyland’s suspension by one game. Leyland was initially suspended for six games for throwing a punch at Dodger pitcher Kevin Gross last Tuesday.
