Brazil Gunmen Kill 21 in Slum
RIO DE JANEIRO — Hooded gunmen invaded a shantytown and killed at least 21 people in what seemed to be revenge for the deaths of Rio police officers, the state government said Monday.
About 20 hooded men dressed in black and armed with automatic weapons and shotguns invaded the Vigario Geral shantytown about 11 p.m. Sunday and opened fire on residents at random, a spokesman for Rio de Janeiro’s military police said.
“It was a massacre. Women and children were machine-gunned,†he said.
The killings came later on the same day that four military police were ambushed by alleged drug traffickers in the shantytown and shot to death.
