Motor Home Catches Fire on Freeway

A motor home caught fire after its transmission overheated on the Golden State Freeway north of Lake Hughes Road in Castaic early Monday morning, forcing the temporary closure of all northbound freeway lanes, the California Highway Patrol reported.

No one was hurt in the 3:37 a.m. fire, but the 27-foot-long motor home was destroyed, Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Derek Reyna said. Damage was estimated at $25,000.

Reyna said the motor home was being driven by Larry Plowman Jr., 32, of Sacramento in a caravan when it caught fire. The driver of another vehicle noticed the fire in his rearview mirror and alerted Plowman.

Plowman pulled over and tried to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher, but the fire had already spread to much of the vehicle, Reyna said. The freeway was closed for about 30 minutes to allow fire officials to extinguish the fire and clean up.
